If you wish to partition your disk into multiple numbers of logical units then the following steps will definitely help you. If you perform partition on your own then you can have your operating system separated from your data. This separation reduces data corruption risks.

The following few steps will help you effectively partition your hard disk in Windows 7:

• Step 1: First step is opening the start menu and then typing “computer management”. When the computer management icon shows in the search results, click on it to open the computer management tool window.
• Step 2: In the computer management tool look for the “disk management tool”. When you click on the disk management tool you will be able to see all the present partitions in your system.
• Step 3: The Third step is making space for new partition. Choose a partition for resize and right click on it. On right click select the option of “shrink volume”. In case you have no partition, you will be having only C: drive. In that case right click on the C: drive and select shrink volume to reduce its size. Moreover, there might be a predefined partition present called “System Reserved”. Make sure you don’t go anywhere near this partition.
• Step 4: Shrinking the drive is the next step. You have to enter the reduced size of this drive. After selecting the size, click on “shrink” button for confirmation. You can only reduce the size of a drive as specified in “Size of available shrink space”.
• Step 5: After the above 4 steps a new unallocated volume is now available in the disk management window. You have to right click the unallocated volume and choose the “simple volume” option.
• Step 6: A pop up called “New Simple Volume Wizard” appears. Click on “next” button    in this pop up.
• Step 7: Now you have to specify the size of your new partition. Enter the new memory size you want to allocate to the partition and then click on “next” button to continue. The maximum memory that is available in your system can be allocated by you to this new partition. You cannot specify a volume larger than the maximum available volume.
• Step 8: The new volume or partition need a new name. So give it a path or a letter name and again click on the “next” button to continue. The new name or path will be needed to navigate and identify the new volume or partition in the Windows.
• Step 9: You have to specify the settings of the new volume. The first thing you have to do is click on “Format this volume with following settings”. Choose NTFS for File System, Default for Allocation Unit Size and Preferred name in Volume Label. Then click on “Perform quick format”. Click “next” to continue.
• Step 10: Click on “finish” to create the new partition.
• Step 11: A pop up will appear and you have to click on “format disk” button when you are asked to partition your new disk.  Another pop up will appear. Leave the settings be and click on “start”. A warning pop up appear now, click on “OK”.
• Step 12: Confirm the partition. If the partition was successful it will appear in your “disk management” window.
