Understanding Reliability Monitor

Reliability Monitor comes already installed with all latest Windows’ versions leaving any need to launch Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and after that adding and configuring snap-ins in order to make Reliability Monitor work. Reliability Monitor is piece of the Reliability & Performance Monitor snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console.

Instead, it taps into Windows Event Manager to extract data about the system, with a focus on events that impact performance counters as well as reliability and configuration data. Reliability monitor follow five different groups of information and that are:

1. Windows failures: Tracks operating system’s failures or errors (e.g., “Windows hardware error”)
2. Application failures: Tracks application failures or errors (e.g., “MS Outlook … stopped working”)
3. Warnings: Tracks failures or an error that does not show any necessary impact on the system’s behaviour (e.g., “Unsuccessful driver installation”)
4. Miscellaneous failures: Tracks other failures or errors, typically peripherals (e.g., “Disk failure”)
5. Information: Tracks system changes and updates (e.g., “Successful Windows Update” and “Successful driver installation”)

Reliability Monitor has a scale from 10 to 1 of stability index where stability index increases with good and trouble free operations and decreases with errors. It can reach as high as 10 and as low as 1.7.

Reliability Monitor provides error details in three categories as follows:

Warnings: This will show all warning messages together in sequential order with a yellow exclamation flag.

Critical events: Windows failures, Lumps Application failures and Miscellaneous failures jointly in chronological order

Informational events: All information messages in a sequential order, marked with a lower-case “i” on a blue circle.

Steps to Launch Reliability Monitor

Open Control Panel

Click on Security and Maintenance.

Select View Reliability History under the heading Check for solutions to problem reports.

How to use Windows 10 Reliability Monitor for troubleshooting

Here we have an image showing a completely messed system with numerous errors. As per the figure on September 24^th the system is showing an appearance of miscellaneous failure. If you will click on the left side of the graph it will show the timeline according to the days however double click on the items will provide you with the detailed list of Disk Failure. This will produce a text warning you regarding disk failures result like loss of data and will show a message to shut down or restart the computer.

Here this pc has a serious issue with its build-in photo viewer application so I have now used a different application for the same purpose in order to reduce the error in the Reliability Monitor.

It is not always you can fix the error in the Reliability Monitor sometimes you have to stop doing the operations bothering the performance of your system.

Hence working with Reliability Monitor will give you the reason of error deciding what might be done to address them. So it is better to say “If you can fix it, avoid it.”
