What measures to take if your PC is damaged due to power outage or surge?

Our Pc or other electronic devices are just like lifelines for us who make our life run smoother and hassle free. But as they depend on electricity, there is always the risk of damage. Anything like a blizzard or a storm can bring about a power outage or surge. Hurricanes, snow or even heavy rains will result in power outage. When the power comes back after an outage, there is always a possibility of power surge and due to this your electronic devices may get damaged. The computer’s inner mechanism may get damaged and your PC may get in a state where it won’t start at all. So before going to the ways and measures to correct the damage done by power outage, we should know the precautions which can be taken so that your PC will not be damaged.

1. When there is power outage, it is necessary to unplug your PC.
2. You can keep one light plugged in and in on position so that you will get an indication when the electricity comes back.
3. It is always better to have a backup of all the important files on an external USB drive so that they are lost if your PC gets damaged.
4. You can also install a barrier like surge protector which will protect your computer by reducing the sudden power surge.
5. You can also have a UPS which will give you enough time so that you can complete your routine of shut down and can shut your computer safely.

Ways to correct the damage done to your PC by power outage or surge are as follows:

• If your PC fails to start which means there are no indicative sounds or lights, then there can be two possibilities. First possibility is that your power supply is damaged. If your power supply is damaged, then you can replace that by yourself and PC will work as before.
• If your laptop is damaged then it is better that you take it to an expert for damage control.

• If your PC is working intermittently, then it can be a problem of motherboard or a small chance that the CMOS information is scrambled. To correct this you can remove the small battery on motherboard. Insert it after five minutes and restart your PC.
• If the problem still persists, it means that your motherboard is damaged. In that case you have two options. Either you can buy an identical motherboard and your computer will work as before or you can opt for purchasing a new computer.
• If your PC starts but there is only a BIOS screen or a curser which is blinking or only an error message, then it means the SSD or internal hard disk is damaged. You will have to replace the drive and reinstall your programs and operating system.

As you can see that the damage to PC can be controlled easily if you know what to do. But it is always better to take precautions so that the PC is not damaged in the first place.
